A Night Less Ordinary
Wed 18th February
Free tickets for Hampshire's young theatre goers
Theatre Royal Winchester is offering 500 free theatre tickets per year for the next two years to attract young people to come to the theatre for the first time.
The free theatre tickets scheme, called A Night Less Ordinary, is open to anyone under 26 and is a nationwide scheme for theatres who have been successful in their bid to participate. A Night Less Ordinary is an Arts Council England initiative supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, to get more young people into theatres across the country. The £2.5million scheme will provide 618,000 free theatre tickets to anyone under 26 in more than 200 venues across England between February 2009 and March 2011.
Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Winchester, Fiona Burn, said, 'A Night Less Ordinary represents a fantastic opportunity for regional theatres such as Theatre Royal Winchester and New Theatre Royal Portsmouth to work together to increase participation in the arts amongst young people by engaging them in the theatre. We are delighted to have been successful in our application to be part of the scheme, along with New Theatre Royal Portsmouth.' Judith Hibberd, Head of Performng Arts at Arts Council England, South East said, 'At the Arts Council, we believe that the arts have the power to inspire and transform lives - which is why our mantra is great art for everyone. For that mission to become a reality we must make it easy for young people to experience powerful and inspiring art, show them that the arts are for them and hopefully help creat a new generation of arts audiences. The news that 23 theatres and arts centres across the south east will be opening their doors for free to young people is a fantastic step in the right direction and I can't wait to see it happen.'
The free tickets initiative will apply to selected shows and the full list of forthcoming shows will be available online and at the Theatre Royal Winchester box office week beginning 23 Feburary.
