Fiddler on the Roof

Anatevka, Russia, 1905.

In the small Russian shtetl, the Jewish families are governed by tradition.

Tradition regulates the weekly routine, dress, food customs and who can interact with whom.

Tevye, the philosophical village milkman is the father of five daughters.

Our protagonist is a man trying to meet tragedy with humour while he struggles to accept a rapidly changing world; a world in which his beloved daughters break with convention and leave home one by one.

“You might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune without breaking his neck” he declares in his opening lines.

The universal appeal of the Broadway hit is well documented. The 1964 run of the musical was nominated for ten Tony Awards, and won nine. Based on the series of tales written by Sholem Aleichem, (an alias for “peace be unto you”), the title of the play derived its name from artist Marc Chagall’s green faced violinist “The Fiddler” (1912-1913).

The themes are as relevant to a contemporary audience as they ever were. Tradition, repression, prejudice and diaspora compete with hope, familial love, tolerance and faith.

This large cast of actors, musicians and crew have enthusiastically embraced both the music and the characters. With humour, empathy and pathos, they have explored life among the Jewish community of a pre-revolutionary Russia, drawing their own comparisons and seeking to breathe new life into this widely performed production.
