Marmalade, Nostalgia, Spectacle
Marmalade, nostalgia, spectacle and performance inspired by cultures from across the world – Live Theatre Winchester Trust (LTWT) this Summer 2018.
By Deryck, Chief Exec of LTWT
It’s May Day as I write and yet it is pouring down and positively chilly outside!
We are eternal optimists here though and already dreaming of summer, with the launch of our Theatre Royal summer brochure and the realisation that we are now less than two months until Hat Fair 2018!
As an organisation which presents a large Outdoor Arts Festival like Hat Fair we have to be optimistic about the weather and believe that the sun will shine when we need it to; in this case from Friday 29 June to the Sunday 1 July please!
Hat Fair this year will be spectacular, not least because we are bringing the brilliant BLOCK to Winchester on the Friday night of Hat Fair. Created and performed by Motionhouse and No Fit State Circus we know you will love it.
Of course Motionhouse were performing their indoor show at Theatre Royal Winchester only last November and we are making those sort of programming links more and more between Hat Fair and the Theatre Royal – outdoors and indoors.
In that vein we feature Mimbre’s The Exploded Circus on the front of our Theatre Royal summer brochure this year and are delighted to be presenting spectacular contemporary circus indoors as well as outdoors this season inspired by Hat Fair.
Mimbre are an all female team, most appropriate in this year particularly, as is the visit of the iconic Germaine Greer in June.
Germaine would not be happy if I talked about her as part of our nostalgia theme this season – so I won’t! However we are delighted that Dame Esther Rantzen is also coming, in conversation with her daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, to share anecdotes from her career across the last 50 years.
We are also looking back fondly and with plenty of giggles (‘Laughter’ is an ongoing programming priority for us) with the help of shows which celebrate the brilliance of Morecambe and Wise with An Evening of Eric and Ern and the madness of The Goon Show!
I am delighted that our summer season features so much performance inspired from cultures across the globe. It feels so important in these times that we remain open and outward facing and that we celebrate diverse cultures on our stage and in our City.
As usual Hat Fair features international acts from many nations but this summer Theatre Royal Winchester also welcomes work inspired by Spain (Flamenco Express), Japan (Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers), India (Bollywood Brass Band) and Jamaica (YolanDa Brown).
We also present a diverse mix of styles on stage with Flamenco, Ballet, Contemporary, Capoeira, Hip Hop and Aerial within our dance season and Operetta, Musicals, Classical, Brass, Swing, Drumming and Jazz all featured in our music offering.
So dip a toe in and try something new as well as what you are familiar with. You only live once so make sure you have experienced everything!
What about ‘Marmalade’ I hear you cry? Well that reference in the title of this piece is to the branding agency Marmalade On Toast who we have now chosen to work with us on refreshing the brand for our organisation.
It is brilliant that they are a local creative agency and share our mind set that Winchester has all the ingredients to become a real hot bed of creative practice and ideas. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with them on this over the next six months and will be consulting as part of the process. If you would like to be part of this consultation just let me know and we will be sure to find a way of including you.
We love getting to know you and hope you will come and sample the delights on offer across the summer. You will be greeted with a big smile and a warm welcome.
Come join the fun!
