Classic Movies Return to Winchester

We’re thrilled to announce that from May 2025, we’ll be bringing a selection of classic movies to back the big screen!

Our new film programme features a fantastic mix of golden oldies and contemporary favourites - including Singin’ in the Rain, Dirty Dancing, Some Like It Hot, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Matilda, and Roman Holiday.

Get ready to see Hollywood legends like Gene Kelly, Patrick Swayze, Marilyn Monroe, Harrison Ford, Danny DeVito, and Audrey Hepburn lighting up our auditorium.

Classic cinema will complement our regular screenings of National Theatre Live productions and our diverse live performance events, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

A Return to Our Cinema Roots

Cinema has long been part of our story at Theatre Royal Winchester.

Originally built as a hotel, our building was transformed into a cine-variety theatre showing silent films in 1914, before becoming a full-time cinema.

When the building faced demolition in the 1970s, a passionate group of theatre lovers came together to save it, reopening as Theatre Royal Winchester in 1978.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation, we installed a cinema screen, laser projector, streaming equipment, and surround sound system in 2021 - bringing film back to our venue in a brand-new way.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to the movies at Theatre Royal Winchester!
