Refurbished Facilities Officially Open

Theatre Royal Winchester, and the team at Play to the Crowd, the charity behind the theatre, have officially celebrated the opening of the theatre’s newly refurbished downstairs stalls toilets, thanking the supporters who helped make the project possible.

A special event was held at the theatre to mark the completion of the refurbishment and to recognise the generosity of funders, partners and individual donors whose support ensured the success of this vital project.

Improving Audience Experience and Protecting the Theatre’s Future

The refurbishment was identified as a priority last year after Play to the Crowd recognised the urgent need to improve audience experience, enhance environmental sustainability and safeguard the theatre’s long-term financial stability. The ageing facilities required significant investment to avoid ongoing short-term repairs — or, at worst, the potential closure of the venue.

The completed project represents a crucial investment in the historic building, ensuring modern, reliable facilities that meet current needs and protect Theatre Royal Winchester for future generations.

Thanks to Funders, Partners and the Local Community

Key supporters were thanked at the event, including The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Backstage Trust, and Winchester Theatre Trust, which leases the building to the charity. Appreciation was also shared for corporate partner Masker Architects, who designed the new facilities and oversaw the construction work.

Gratitude was given to everyone who contributed to the £100,000 public appeal, as well as audiences whose ticket purchases — which include a building restoration levy — helped fund the project.

Civic Support and Community Celebration

The celebration event was attended by donors alongside The Right Worshipful the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, Councillor Sudhakar Achwal and Councillor Vivian Achwal, highlighting the importance of Theatre Royal Winchester as a key cultural venue for the city.

Modern, Inclusive and Sustainable Facilities

The refurbished toilets now offer more cubicles, helping to reduce queues and waiting times, particularly during intervals, while retaining dedicated women’s and men’s facilities. The improvements also enhance inclusivity and accessibility for audiences.

In addition, the new facilities incorporate water-saving and energy-efficient features, supporting Play to the Crowd’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible stewardship of the theatre building.
