It is three days before Christmas and, in the Doctors’ Common Room of St Andrew’s Hospital in London, Dr David Mortimore prepares to deliver the Ponsonby lecture which will guarantee him promotion and a knighthood. In walks a nurse, with whom he had an affair eighteen years previously, who tells him that they had a son who has come looking for his father.
