- Stalls: 252 seats.
- Circle: 142 seats.
Holds/Removals
- Sound & LX Stalls position requires the removal of 14 seats.
- Orchestra Pit use requires the removal of 34 seats.
- Auditorium Treads require 5 seats (depending on position).
Stage specifications
Our stage features a hardboard surface over a ply-sprung floor. A black dance floor is installed and can be removed upon request, provided you give the Technical Manager at least 28 days' notice prior to arrival.

- Type: Double purchase counterweight system with 33 lines.
- Barrel diameter & length: 48mm OD; 8.9m long with 0.75m extensions (extensions restrict flying height).
- Max load rating per set: 290kg.
- Overall system load rating: 10.2 tonnes.
- Maximum out dead: 12800mm (Restricted to 4880mm Stage Right and 7500mm Stage Left).
Note: Bar 1 (House Tabs) and Bar 18 (Permanent Cinema Screen) are not usable for flying scenery.

- Sound power: 13 amp clean sound power in each corner of the stage.
- Stage left: 1 x 63A Single Phase.
- Upstage right: 1 x 63A Three Phase.
Lighting control & stock
- Console: ETC Ion Xe with a 40 Fader Wing .
- Dimmers: 104 channels of DMX controlled dimming.
- Network: Up to 16 Universes of Streaming ACN via 2x Chauvet NETX2 Nodes. Any network setting modifications must be agreed upon in advance.
- Our house lighting rig is ready for comedy, dance or play and includes Tungsten and LED fixtures. Please see our welcome pack for more information.
- A robust stock of generic PAR cans, Profiles, Strand Cantata PCs/Fresnel units are available subject to availability.
Sound & communications
- FOH control: Yamaha DM7 Full Size console with 2x Yamaha TIO1608-D2 Stage boxes.
- FOH speaker system: EM Acoustics system featuring R8 passive speakers (Stalls and Circle), S18 Subwoofers, EMS41 Front Fills (removed on request), and R10 Centre Clusters.
- Monitors: 4x EM Acoustics M12 monitor wedges.
- Playback: Apple iMacs prepared with QLab 5 (Audio & Video license).
- Comms: Tecpro master station with 4x wired belt packs, 8x headsets, and a 4-way Hollyland M1 wireless comms system.
- Microphones: Shure SM58/57s, Rode M5 condenser pairs, Sennheiser MKH 416 rifle mics, and Crown PCC160 boundary mics. (Premium wireless and choir packages are available for hire; see rates below).
Logistics and health & safety
Get-in & loading
Our loading bay is located just outside the theatre. To find our exact position, use the What3Words address: ///pranced.fizzle.shadow
- Arrival: Please contact the technical team upon arrival so we can lower the bollards and open the dock doors/ramp.
- Space: The bay accommodates one articulated lorry or 2 to 3 smaller vehicles.
- Parking: No long-term parking is available on-site. Parking can be found nearby at Jewry Street, Tower Street, or Worthy Lane car parks.
Backstage facilities
We offer 3 primary dressing rooms with lift access across levels. A larger fourth room is available upon request (subject to availability and an extra hire fee). Laundry facilities (washing machine and dryer) are located on the first floor.
- Dressing Room 1 (Stage Level): Fits 5 adults. Includes a sink, 5 chairs, 2 showers, accessible toilet, and a fridge.
- Dressing Rooms 2 & 3 (First Floor): Fit 3 adults each. Includes sinks, mirrors, and nearby access to a green space equipped with a sofa, microwave, water fountain, and fridge.
Vital house rules
- Nut-free venue: Theatre Royal Winchester is a strict nut-free venue. No nuts or nut-based products are permitted anywhere on-site.
- PPE: Approved safety boots must be worn by all crew members during the get-in, fit-up, and get-out.
- Signing in: Every member of your company must sign in and out daily via the tablet opposite the stage door or by scanning the backstage QR codes.
Frequently asked questions
Can we park our tour vehicles at the theatre?
We have room in our loading bay for load-in/out purposes only (fitting one articulated lorry or 2-3 smaller vehicles). Once unloaded, vehicles must be moved to nearby public car parks on Jewry Street, Tower Street, or Worthy Lane.
Do you provide wireless microphones, or are they an extra charge?
Your booking automatically includes 2 wireless microphones completely free of charge (FOC). If you require more, we have an extensive fleet of Sennheiser EW-DX handheld and belt-pack units available for daily/weekly hire rates.
Can we bring snacks backstage for the cast and crew?
Yes, but with one vital exception: we are a strict nut‑free building. Please ensure that absolutely no nuts or nut-containing snacks are brought through the stage door by any performers, crew, or chaperones.
What is the notice period required if we want to remove the black dance floor?
If your production requires removal of the black dance floor, you must notify our Technical Manager at least 28 days before your arrival so we can schedule the removal.
