We want everyone to experience the thrill of live performance in a way that feels comfortable, safe, and tailored to them. Alongside our standard schedule, Theatre Royal Winchester proudly hosts a selection of dedicated access performances.

Our access performance types

Relaxed performances

These performances offer a wonderfully informal atmosphere designed for individuals, groups, and families with children on the autistic spectrum, sensory or communication disorders, learning disabilities, or anyone who simply prefers a gentler theatre environment.

  • The auditorium lighting is kept on at a low level throughout the show.
  • Sudden loud noises, sudden blackouts, and bright flashing lights are completely removed or softened.
  • There is a completely judgment-free attitude toward moving around, making noise, or stepping out to take a break in our Circle level relaxed area.
Audio‑described performances & Touch Tours

Designed specifically to bring the visual magic of theatre to life for blind or visually impaired audience members.

  • Audio‑description: Patrons receive a comfortable set of headphones through which a live narrator describes the onstage action, costumes, and set design during natural pauses in the actors' dialogue.
  • Touch Tours: Taking place on stage exactly 1 hour before the audio‑described performance (where available), Touch Tours allow audience members to explore the stage layout, interact with the set design, and feel the props and costumes to familiarise themselves with the world of the show.
BSL interpreted performances

During these performances, a certified British Sign Language interpreter stands clearly visible at the side of the stage.

The interpreter dynamically translates the spoken dialogue, songs, and ambient sound effects in real‑time for Deaf and BSL‑using audience members.
